You and I

father and son on the beach

Question: Which is correct, you and me “or “you and I”?

Answer: They both are! Study the examples below so you can always choose the right words.

Subject: “I” is the subject.
O – I like to go dancing on Fridays.
O – My girlfriend and I like to go dancing on Fridays.
X – Me like to go dancing on Fridays.
X – My girlfriend and me like to go dancing on Fridays.

You first: It sounds much more polite to say the other person first.
△ I and my boss went fishing. (ok but not commonly used)
O – My boss and I went fishing last weekend.
O – You and I have a meeting at six o’clock.

Object: “me” is the object.
O – My sister will meet me me at the station.
O – My sister will meet you and me at the station.

Note: Many people feel that this sounds too informal and it’s common (but grammatically incorrect) to say:
△- My sister will meet you and I at the station.
X – My sister will meet I at the station.

Sharing
When we share something, we say “between you and me” not “between you and I“.
O – Between you and me, that hat looks terrible.
X – Between you and I, that hat looks terrible.

Why? “Between” is a preposition. Use
object pronouns after prepositions not subject pronouns.
O – She made dinner for him and her.
X – She made dinner for he and she.

O – This computer is shared between my coworker and me. (them)
X – This computer is shared between my coworker and I. (they)
